FAQ

There are several reasons for putting flakes on your garage floor. These flakes will add to the thickness of the floor as they work into the epoxy. Flakes are also the biggest color aspect of the floor, especially when used in a full-broadcast flooring application. Quite possibly the most important aspect is that they provide slip resistance when applied as part of a quality garage floor system. Various sizes of chips are available, and the sizes should be considered as to the base coat and topcoat used for the desired texture and slip resistance.
While there are powered mechanical blowers available for this task on large commercial and industrial projects, most are broadcast by hand. Generally, it’s best to pour from boxes into a 5-gallon bucket and distribute by throwing the flakes into the air in handfuls. These flakes will then fall and flutter down into the floor covered with wet epoxy or other coating products. Throwing these flakes high in the air generally you have better and faster coverage than rolling or throwing from the side into the broadcast medium.

The advantages of a full flake broadcast garage floor are numerous. Full broadcast flake floors are by fare the most popular type of garage flooring and have been for the past couple decades. Their durability and ease of cleaning make full flake broadcast floors very popular in the hardest working room in your home. A few of these benefits include:

  • Floor texture/slip resistance
  • Hides imperfections in the floor/uneven surfaces/cracks
  • Camouflages other concrete damage
  • Virtually unlimited color selections
  • Some “cushioning” and floor thickness improvements
  • Sizing options from 1/64th inch to 1” sizes available
  • Economical addition to any garage floor
  • Increased floor thickness

Total amount of garage floor flake needed for a floor will be determined by a number of factors. For example, a full broadcast floor will require the most chips as it covers the entire floor in flakes.

Additionally, the floor coating you broadcast into may affect the amount of chips needed and that get drawn into the floor coating. As well has how you throw your flakes and the experience that you have in throwing the flake. Size also matters; smaller chips require more pounds to cover the same area. Since 1/4-inch flakes are by far the most popular we will provide a formula for 1/4” flake application. Per manufacturer recommendations you should order 1 pound of flake for every 7 square feet you desire to cover for 1/4” flake. For smaller chips like 1/16” you should 1 pound of flakes for every 4 feet you want to cover with a full flake broadcast.

For 1/4” flake you should have 1 pound of flake for every 7 Square feet you with to cover with a full broadcast. To determine the amount needed for your project you should determine your square footage (length x width) then divide that total square foot number by 7. This will equal the number of pounds recommended by the manufacturer for your project. Please note that this is the amount of chips needed for a project using our flakes. Other manufacturers often sell chips that have a heavier weight, and you would be required to order more pounds of chips if using flakes from those manufacturers.
The advantages of flake epoxy garage floors are numerous. The number of colors available makes flake floors a huge advantage of a standard one-color floor that you may have 8-12 color choices possibly. Texture and slip resistance is likely the biggest advantage if installed well. Caution should be taken to ensure the floor is not too dry and slip resistant additives should not be needed for garage applications with a good topcoat application. Ease of cleaning should also be achieved in a quality garage floor application.
