For a full broadcast (reject) of 1/4" flake, plan on about 0.10 lb per square foot — roughly 1 lb per 7 sq ft. A standard two-car garage (~400 sq ft) needs about 40–50 lb at full reject, or less for a decorative scatter. Smaller 1/16" flake covers differently: budget closer to 0.16–0.17 lb per square foot at full coverage because finer chip packs tighter. Always order 10–15% over your calculated need for waste and touch-ups.

1/4" flake is the most popular size for garage and residential jobs — it creates a bold, textured, terrazzo-like finish that reads well from standing height. 1/16" flake produces a finer, more uniform, commercial look and requires more material by weight for full coverage. Larger flake equals more visual texture and less material per sq ft; smaller flake equals a smoother appearance and more material per sq ft. For large or phased jobs, order the full quantity at once when possible to stay within a single production run.

Spec polyaspartic when the job needs fast return-to-service, UV stability (sun exposure or full-reject flake), or a hot-climate install — it cures in 1–4 hours, is harder than epoxy, and will not yellow. Spec 100% solids epoxy when you want a longer broadcast window, lower material cost, or a thicker single coat. The most durable system uses both: a 100% solids epoxy base for thickness and adhesion, then a polyaspartic topcoat for hardness and UV resistance. The flake itself is compatible with epoxy, polyaspartic, and polyurea systems.

No — hot tire pickup is a topcoat failure, not a flake failure. It happens when a topcoat is too thin, too soft, or was not fully cured before a vehicle was parked on it. A properly applied two-part epoxy or polyaspartic topcoat at correct mil thickness, cured the full 7 days before parking, resists hot tire pickup. The flake is locked under the topcoat, so the chip is never the point of failure.
