If your slab has oil stains, deep cracks, or visible moisture, hire a pro or rent a concrete grinder. Otherwise, two adults can do a single bay in a weekend.

DIY material cost for a two-car garage runs $400 to $800 depending on coverage (decorative vs. full reject) and topcoat choice. That covers base coat, flake (one to two 40 lb boxes), topcoat, and a basic grinder rental. Hiring a pro for the same garage typically runs $2,500 to $6,000 depending on region, prep complexity, and finish. The flake itself is the same product either way. For a coating that will not peel, you need to open the concrete pores. Acid etching works on perfectly clean, non-sealed concrete but fails on most real-world garage slabs because of trace oil, sealers from the builder, or polished surfaces. Full chemical cure (hot tire resistance, harsh cleaners) takes 5 to 7 days. Polyaspartic topcoats cure faster than epoxy. If you used a 100% solids epoxy topcoat, wait the full 7 days before parking. The flake is locked in by the topcoat, so the cure window is set by your topcoat product, not the base coat.

Use polyaspartic when you need same-day or next-day return to service, UV stability (sun exposure or full reject flake), or you live in a hot climate. Polyaspartic cures in 1 to 4 hours, is harder than epoxy, and does not yellow. Use 100% solids epoxy when you want a longer working window for broadcasting flake, lower material cost, or a slightly thicker single coat. The most durable system is actually both: a 100% solids epoxy base coat for thickness and adhesion, then a polyaspartic topcoat for hardness and UV.

Hot tire pickup happens when the topcoat is too soft, too thin, or never fully cured before the car was parked. A real two-part epoxy or polyaspartic topcoat at a proper mil thickness, allowed to cure for 7 full days before parking, does not lift. The cheap one-part "garage floor paint" sold in box stores is what fails to hot tires within months. With a 100% solids base and a polyaspartic topcoat, hot tire pickup is not a real concern.

Torginol is the original US manufacturer of decorative vinyl flake, in production since 1953. Their chips are extruded under heat and pressure to a consistent thickness, then color-matched batch to batch. Off-brand flake is often co-extruded with filler material, has more thickness variation, and uses dye that fades faster under UV. The price difference is real but so is the performance difference on jobs that need to look the same in 10 years.

No, not with a standard epoxy or polyaspartic base coat. Below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, the base coat cure window stretches from 20 to 40 minutes out to 2 to 4 hours, which means the flake either bonds incompletely or sinks into the slowly curing coat. Cold-weather formulations of polyaspartic exist (rated to 35 degrees) and are worth the price markup if the job calendar runs through winter. Below 35 degrees, postpone.

Custom blends built through the blend builder have a minimum order of 2 cases per recipe. The 2-case floor is because the manufacturer mixes a batch to spec rather than pulling from stock, so a single-case order does not justify the run. Custom blends ship in 7 to 10 business days from order.

Fisheyes come from surface contamination on the base coat. Three causes account for almost all of them: silicone from a nearby release agent or sealer, oil residue that the grinder did not fully remove, or a damp slab releasing moisture under the freshly poured base coat. Prevention is mechanical grinding to CSP 2 to 3 profile, vacuuming with a wet-dry HEPA vac before the base coat goes down, and using a moisture meter to confirm the slab is under 4% MC before pouring.

Decorative flake floors with a smooth polyaspartic or epoxy topcoat are slippery when wet. To make a flake floor safer in wet areas, broadcast non-skid aluminum oxide into the topcoat before it cures, OR top with a polyaspartic that has aluminum oxide premixed. Most garage and commercial coatings buyers spec the non-skid additive when the floor sees standing water from vehicles or wash-downs.

Not directly. An existing painted floor has to be ground off completely before a new flake system goes down. Bond failure of the new coating on top of old paint is the most common warranty claim on flake floors. The exception is a recently installed epoxy floor (less than 6 months) that is fully cured and has been roughed up by sanding. For anything older or unknown, grind to concrete.

For automotive showrooms, retail showrooms, and other display spaces where the floor reads from across a wide room, 1/4" flake at decorative or full broadcast coverage is the standard spec. The larger chip creates a terrazzo-like read at distance. 1/16" flake reads more uniform and commercial. For a flat industrial look in a showroom, go 1/16" full reject. For a higher-end decorative look, go 1/4" full reject.
